PYR test

From WikiLectures

The PYR test is used to rapidly distinguish Streptococcus pyogenes from other β-haemolytic streptococci. Streptococcus pyogenes is manifested by the presence of the enzyme PYRase (pyrrolidonyl arylamidase), which causes disc reddening. The disc is incubated for 1-2 minutes at laboratory temperature. It is also used to distinguish Enterococcus from group D streptococci (S. bovis, S. equinus).

Results:

  • Positive – reddening (Streptococcus pyogenes, Enterococcus spp.).
