Non-cancerous diseases of the nose, paranasal sinuses, nasopharynx

From WikiLectures

Non-tumoral diseases in these localizations include inflammation.

Acute nasopharyngitis and sinusitis[edit | edit source]

Acute nasopharyngitis combined with sinusitis is one of the most common inflammatory diseases of viral origin. The most common causative agents of this disease are rhinoviruses, adenoviruses and parainfluenza virus. The disease is most commonly manifested by swelling and redness of the mucous membranes with serous exudation, often complicated by secondary bacterial infection.

Sinusitis[edit | edit source]

Sinusitis is an inflammatory disease of the paranasal sinuses and is a frequent complication of rhinitis.

Allergic rhinitis[edit | edit source]

Allergic rhinitis is an inflammatory disease of the nasal mucosa that arises from Immunoglobulin E related hypersensitivity.

Catarrhal chronic rhinitis[edit | edit source]

Is a chronic inflammatory disease that most commonly arises as a result of untreated acute rhinitis. It often develops complications in the form of the development of atrophic chronic inflammation with squamous metaplasia. Other complications include the development of a hyperplastic form of chronic catarrhal rhinitis, which may be accompanied by the formation of polyps.

Granulomatous chronic rhinitis[edit | edit source]

Most often arises from specific inflammatory processes (TBC, sarcoidosis, Wegener's granulomatosis).
