Salivary gland diseases

Salivary gland diseases are divided into 2 groups. They are:

  1. tumor diseases (benign tumors, malignant tumors, possibly also so-called pseudotumors - cysts and pseudocysts);
  2. non-cancerous diseases (sialoadenitis, sialolithiasis, sialoadenosis).

Investigative methods [ edit | edit source ][edit | edit source]

  • medical history ,
  • physical examination (aspect and palpation),
  • USG, USG + FNAB (fine needle aspiration biopsy),
  • sialography to show contrast sialolithiasis,
  • CT,
  • Salivary glands : 1st gl. parotid , 2nd gl. submandibularis , 3rd gl. sublingualis
    Salivary glands : 1st gl. parotid , 2nd gl. submandibularis , 3rd gl. sublingualis
    MRI.

Developmental defects[edit | edit source]

  • aplasia of one or more glands, rarely all salivary glands are missing,
  • duplication or anomalous outlet of the salivary glands.

Functional disorders[edit | edit source]

  • sialorrhea – excessive production of saliva,
  • hyposialia – decreased production of saliva.
