Urokinase is a proteolytic enzyme, whose main function is the conversion of inactive plazminogen to active plasmin. The enzyme was first isolated from human urine (hence its name), later it was also found in blood plasma and extracellular matrix. Urokinase is used in clinical practise as a treatment for various manifestations of thromboembolic disease.
