Paronychia (paronychium in latin) is the term for inflammation of the nail bed and its surroundings. It can occur both acutely, as well as chronically. Usually caused by a bacterial or fungal infection. It is manifested by pain, swelling, redness and trophic changes around the nail. Risk factors are peripheral circulation disorders (more often in women), chronic irritation or minor trauma. A similar disease is panaricium – purulent inflammation of the soft tissues of the finger.
