Moraxella

The genus Moraxella inhabits the mucous membrane of the upper respiratory tract, conjunctival sac and genital tract. Its pathogenicity is very low. Recurrent infections are likely to be associated with bronchial asthma. They are characterized by a positive oxidase and catalase reaction.

Morphology[edit | edit source]

G− coccobacilli or short rods.

Occurrence[edit | edit source]

In the mucosa of the nasopharynx, conjunctival sac and genital tract as part of the normal flora.

Cultivation[edit | edit source]

Yolk soils, masopepton blood agar are ideal for their growth. Blood agar is not so suitable for them.

Material collection[edit | edit source]

Material is removed from the conjunctival sac for diagnosis.
