Hefestin

From WikiLectures

Hefestin is enzyme involved in the transport of iron across the basolateral membrane enterocyte into the bloodstream. We classify it among ferrooxidases. It is a membrane homologue of plasma ceruloplasmin.

Hefestin catalyzes the oxidation of ferrous iron released from feroportin to trivalent, which is necessary for its further transmission in the blood by transferrin.
