End-systolic volume (ESO, final, residual volume) is the volume of blood in the heart chamber after the end of the ejection phase, i.e. after closing the semilunar valves. Under resting conditions in a healthy adult, the ESO is about 50–60 mL of blood in each heart chamber (not both combined). ESO remains in the ventricle until ventricular filling begins, i.e. until the atrioventricular valves open.
