Secret collection from the airways (pediatrics)

From WikiLectures

The most common indication is the collection of material for bacteriological examination.

It is most commonly performed on a intubated or tracheostomized patient. After insertion of the aspiration tube into the airways, its end is connected to a sterile vial whose stopper is perforated with two needles. One cone is connected to a suction catheter, the other needle is connected to a normal suction. After the suction is completed, we first take out the needle connected to the catheter.
