Myositis ossificans

Myositis ossificans

Ossifying myositis is caused by ossification of muscle following metaplasia of histiocytes into osteoblasts. It arises after a muscle injury with the formation of a hematoma, often due to an error in the treatment regimen. It can also be a genetic disposition. There is also a genetically determined disease called myositis ossificans progressiva (OMIM: 135100) with a very severe clinical course. In the acute stage, it manifests itself as a painful swelling. Treatment in the acute phase is rest, local and overall NSAID, or removal if causing local problems.
