Musculus occipitofrontalis

Musculus occipitofrontalis is a muscle covering the cranial vault. It consists of two parts – the ventral part, which we call the frontalis muscle; from the dorsal part, which we call m. occipitalis. Together with m. temporoparietalis it forms m. epicranius.

Musculus frontalis (venter frontalis m. occipitofrontalis)[edit | edit source]

Origin: subcutaneous tissue and skin in glabella and eyebrow area; edges m. procerus, m. orbicularis oculi.

Insertion: galea aponeurotica.

Innervation: n. facialis.

Function:

  • pulls the skin of the forehead cranially;
  • helps lift the upper lid (attention, wonder);
  • conditions horizontal forehead wrinkles.

Musculus occipitalis (venter occipitalis m. occipitofrontalis)[edit | edit source]

Origin: os occipitale – linea nuchalis suprema.

Insertion: galea aponeurotica.

Innervation: n. facialis.

Function:

  • Moves galeu aponeuroticu posteriorly;
  • helps pull the venter frontalis behind the upper lid + is its antagonist.
