Musculus anconeus

Musculus anconeus is a small skeletal muscle that we would look for on the posterior surface of the elbow capsule. The muscle bundles of m. anconeus run in the same direction as the caput medialis musculi tricipitis brachii. Thus, they are actually a direct continuation of the triceps. The affiliation to the musculus triceps brachii is also due to the same innervation. We can therefore speak of a fourth head of the triceps.

Beginning:

• epicondylus lateralis humeri

Extension:

• distal to the olecranon ulnae (fourth head of the triceps)

Innervation:

• nervus radialis

Function:

• Extension in the forearm

• deep bundles prevent the joint capsule from being twisted during extension in the articulatio cubiti

Vascular supply:

• a. collateralis radialis

• a. collateralis ulnaris
