Batrafen® cream, a mass-produced medicinal product with ciclopirox

Ciclopirox is a broad-spectrum antifungal with good penetration into tissues (especially the nail plate), which also acts on spores.  Used for the topical treatment of cutaneous mycoses and fungal vulvovaginitis.

Principle of effect[edit | edit source]

Ciclopirox enters and accumulates in fungal cells. It binds irreversibly to their cell wall and membrane, ribosomes, mitochondria and microsomes. The mechanism of action is thought to lie primarily in impaired cell membrane function . The uptake of some nutrients by the fungal cell is reduced and at the same time the excretion of some already formed cellular components is increased.

Antimicrobial spectrum[edit | edit source]

The antimicrobial spectrum of ciclopirox includes dermatophytes, yeasts , fungi and mycoplasmas. However, it also has an antibacterial effect on some gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. It is also effective for trichomonads.
