Aspiration pneumopathy (neonatology)

Aspiration pneumopathies of newborns include:

  • Meconium aspiration syndrome;
    • complex respiratory disease of the newborn that arose early after birth due to the penetration of meconium particles (smelt) into the lower respiratory tract;[1]
  • Aspiration of blood during cesarean delivery or vaginal delivery with placental abruption → early-onset respiratory distress of the newborn;
  • Aspiration of water during birth into water;
  • Aspiration during sucking/swallowing dyscoordination
  • Aspiration due to gastro-oesophageal reflux, massive regurgitation and inhalation of food.[2]
