Acidosis (signpost)

Acidosis is a disorder of acid-base balance in which the pH falls below the physiological limit (the physiological value of pH is 7.36-7.44).

• Respiratory acidosis – caused by accumulation of CO₂ in the body (e.g. during hypoventilation).
• Metabolic acidosis – occurs when H⁺ accumulates, insufficient excretion of H⁺ or excessive losses of HCO₃^- (eg diarrhea).
