Sternocleidomastoid region

From WikiLectures

This elongated region is defined by the extent of the sternocleidomastoid muscle (m. sternocleidomastoideus). Between the sternal and clavicular origin of the muscle is a skin fossa called fossa supraclavicularis minor or the lesser supraclavicular fossa. Platysma lies in the subcutaneous tissue , and below, in the upper part of the area, courses the external jugular vein. At the posterior edge of the sternocleidomastoid muscle, sensitive nerves from the cervical plexus penetrate into the subcutaneous tissue. Another layer is the superficial layer of the cervical fascia, lamina superficialis fasciae cervicalis, which covers the sternocleidomastoid muscle.
