In a periodontal patient undergoing prosthetic treatment, during the initial phase of periodontal therapy, it falls to the prosthodontist to create a prosthesis that allows the following:
allow oral hygiene measures
removal and temporary replacement of prosthesis that are not conducive to the above
temporary replacement of hopeless teeth
temporary prosthetic planning whilst perio/prosthdontic co-operation is on going
In the phase of surgical periodontal treatment, the prosthdontic has to advise the periodontist on what corrections are to go where. This applies firstly to the gingival corrections on abutment teeth and then on the mucosa on the edentulous ridges. The prosthodontist will have to consider 3 main things before deciding on treatment for perio patient: The indication for prosthetic treatment Removable or fixed the periodontal problem zones occurring for crowns and bridgework
Cantiliver bridges,bridges abutted at each end with distal canine that is mobile, bridges abutted at each end with hemisected molar. Also to be considered,is the contact of crown margin, type of pontic and contour of crown, and contour of undersurface of pontic
If all these have been addressed, then maintenance phase of periodontal therapy can follow without complications
