Performance status.Quality of life

Performance status

  • Overall condition of the patient - limits the indicated treatment and its results.
  • We evaluate the degree to which the patient is able to take care of himself, mobility, pain, etc.
  • We use two scales:
  1. PS according to WHO:
    • grade 0 - capable of normal physical activity without restriction;
    • grade 1 - unable to work hard, can do lighter work;
    • grade 2 - self-sufficient but unable to work, spends more than 50% of the day out of bed;
    • grade 3 - limited self-sufficient, spends more than 50% of the time on the bed;
    • grade 4 - completely self-sufficient, permanently bedridden.
  2. Karnofsky scale:
    • as a percentage of full (100%) performance;
    • 100% normal activity, 0% death.

Quality of life

  • We should not only prolong the patient's life at all costs, life should also be quality.
  • This assessment should be made by the patient himself (using a questionnaire).
  • The abbreviation QoL - quality of life (physical condition, functional fitness, satisfaction with treatment) is used.
  • QoL assessment is important, especially in patients on palliative care.
