Mental disorders caused by opioids use

Why are they taking it?

• used for their euphoric effect
• high addiction rate

Route of administration:

• IV or inhaled or snorted

Mechanism of Action:

• kappa, delta and mu-receptor agonists

• Opioid induced disorder → depressive disorder, anxiety disorder, sleep disorder, sexual dysfunction, delirium

Therapy:

• longer-acting opioid e.g. methadone, buprenorphine

• many internal comorbidities: malnutrition, infections (HIV, HCV), endocarditis, sepsis
