Leukopenia

From WikiLectures

Term

Leukopenia or leukocytopenia is a decrease in the number of leukocytes in the peripheral blood below the physiological limit (ie approximately 4×109/l). It can often be caused by neutropenia or lymphocytopenia.

Other causes include infections (most often bacterial sepsis, infectious mononucleosis or hepatitis B virus [1]), adverse drug effects (most often chemotherapeutics, thyrostatics, antibiotics, analgesics, antiphlogistics, or neuropsychotropic drugs[1]), or it can be an accompanying phenomenon of other diseases, like systemic or bone marrow disease.
