In the organism, there is a group of substances whose structure is derived from the isoprene molecule - they are made up of two or more isoprene units.
Steroids, triterpenoid derivatives, contain six isoprene units. The most important representative of steroids, cholesterol, forms part of cell membranes, and its derivatives (bile acids, steroid hormones) perform many important functions in the body.
