Bronchiectasis (Internal Propedeutics)

Bronchiectastis is a term used for abnormally widened bronchi.

Characteristics[edit | edit source]

Lumen of bronchi is widened, secretions are accumulated in bronchi – expectoration of purulent sputum, mainly in the morning.

Types[edit | edit source]

Bronchiectasis

According to presence:

  • local;
  • diffuse.

According to its content:

  • emptied;
  • filled by secretions.

According to its origin:

  • acquired (most of them);
  • hereditary.

Percussion[edit | edit source]

  • Resonant (when emptied);
  • Dull of thudlike (when secretions is present).

Auscultation[edit | edit source]

  • Vesicular respiration;
  • scattered wet crackels localized over lower lung lobes.


Diagnosis is affirmed by bronchography.
