Mitophagy is a process within cellular quality control, during which the damaged or surplus mitochondria are eliminated by selective autophagy. The disturbances of mitophagy are associated with the development of numerous conditions, including Parkinsonism or type 2 diabetes. Mitophagy occurs physiologically during the maturation of erythrocytes or spermatogenesis.
