DICOM

From WikiLectures

DICOM is a data standard for the transmission of biomedical image data within PACS systems (X-ray images, endoscopic photographs, ultrasound recordings, etc.). In addition to the data standard, DICOM is also a data format in which data can be stored on disk. In addition to its own image data, DICOM also contains other additional information, in particular information about the modality with which the relevant image was taken and a range of information about the patient.

Although image data is usually compressed in a conventional way, images in DICOM format are not readable by common browsers. However, there are a number of browsers licensed as freeware or shareware, especially for Windows.

In Czech Republic, the DICOM standard is used within the ePACS project.
