Ciklopirox

From WikiLectures

Batrafen® cream, mass-produced medicinal product with ciclopirox
Ciklopirox is a broad-spectrum antimycotic with good tissue penetration (especially the nail plate) that also affects spores. [1]

It is used for the local treatment of cutaneous mycoses and fungal vulvovaginitis.

Principle of Effect[edit | edit source]

Ciclopirox enters fungal cells and accumulates in them. It binds irreversibly to their cell wall and membrane, ribosomes, mitochondria and microsomes. It is assumed that the mechanism of action consists mainly in damage to the functions of the cell membrane'. The intake of some nutrients by the fungal cell will decrease and at the same time the excretion of some already formed cell components will increase. [2]

Antimicrobial spectrum[edit | edit source]

The antimicrobial spectrum of ciclopirox includes dermatophytes, yeasts, fungi and mycoplasmas. It also has an antibacterial effect on some gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. It is also effective against trichomonads. [3]
