The Carpal Tunnel and important anatomical structure is located in the wrist and is a space between the flexor retinaculum and the carpal bones. Many important structures leading from the arm to the hand pass through this tunnel. Including the median nerve, tendons of: flexor digitorum profundus (4 muscles), flexor digitorum superficialis (4 muscles), flexor pollicidus longus (1 muscle) and flexor carpi radialis (1 muscle).

The canal is narrow and if there is even further narrowing due to e.g. swelling or degeneration it can be a cause severe pain, parasthesia and other problems due to entrapment or compression of the median nerve. This is called Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
